The Salvation Army supports around 8,000 children at 44 schools in Haiti; International Development supports around 3,000 children at 22 of these schools.
This project also facilitates access to education for disadvantaged children from rural areas and improves the quality of teaching, for example by providing teachers with further education. The parents of schoolchildren are also involved: they receive training in agricultural economics and financial issues to ensure that children and families do not suffer from hunger. The project creates a supportive teaching and learning environment for the children, with parents also receiving information about the benefits of an upbringing free from violence. The Salvation Army’s schools also promote equal opportunities for boys and girls.
The Salvation Army is the largest non-state education provider in Haiti. Although the majority of the Salvation Army’s schools are in the south-west of the country, where there are very few state-run schools, it also has schools in the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince.
