The motorway between Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, and the coastal city of Mombasa is a risk area for human trafficking, while reports of child abuse and human trafficking have also emerged in connection with tourism on the country’s coast. The Salvation Army’s project aims to safeguard the right to survival and development of those affected, offering protection from exploitation and abuse. The project focuses on five regions located along the motorway and the coast. It aims to draw greater attention to the issues by raising awareness among truck drivers and people living in the focus areas. Schoolchildren will learn more about their rights, as well as how to behave and protect themselves in specific situations. Teachers receive training on violence-free teaching methods and how to recognise and report suspected cases. The project will also work with local authorities and the police to prevent human trafficking and child abuse and combat modern slavery.
