In Myanmar, the Salvation Army is helping to meet the basic needs of around 50,000 people in 100 communities, with strong involvement from the local population. Projects must gain a holistic understanding of the people concerned if they are to have an impact in the long term. After all, poverty has a host of different causes and aspects. When someone falls into poverty, they need more than just financial help. The Salvation Army therefore pursues a comprehensive approach to reducing poverty in the affected communities. Specifically, the project generates higher incomes by creating microcredit groups, as well as providing access to clean drinking water and improving health and hygiene standards. The project thus ensures the basic needs of people living in poverty are met. However, the support also goes beyond this to include other key areas such as education and food security, allowing the Salvation Army to provide people with a path back to a dignified life.
