In this populous country there are stark contrasts between the small, wealthy elite and the general population. For families living in poverty and without prospects for the future, the economic situation is a frequent source of tension. Violence, abuse, hunger and poverty are either a danger or a tragic reality for many children in the Philippines. The Salvation Army created its “Joyville” facility in response to these risks and realities, aiming to protect children and strengthen family structures. The children’s home offers an environment that protects children and supports their development, a place where they feel comfortable and safe. The children are given good clothes, three hot meals a day, and the chance to attend school. Joyville has room for up to 20 children. The children’s home is in contact with the local authorities and raises awareness about children’s rights in the surrounding communities. The Salvation Army also works with the children’s families on issues related to their upbringing, as well as on their future prospects. The children must leave Joyville once they reach a certain age. To ensure they have a solution for the transition period and do not find themselves in a precarious situation again, the Salvation Army maintains “Bethany”, an institution that provides young people with supervised accommodation and the chance to prepare for university entrance.
