With this project the Salvation Army aims to reduce violence against women in particular. The objective is a general reduction in gender-based violence and the promotion of gender equality among the target communities in the north-east of South Africa. The project raises awareness among the population of the negative impact of gender-based violence via community discussions on gender roles as well as on preconceptions and ideals of masculinity. It also provides women affected by gender-based violence with training on how to earn a regular income, thus strengthening their role in the economy. They are also given support with their career choice and further training. The educational work and economic support provided by the project empower women to break the negative cycle of violence, dependence and poverty and to forge a successful future for themselves.
